No diploma is required and the pay as of 2020 is $19/hour.

In addition to directing vehicular and pedestrian traffic, Montreal crossing guards are also expected to « connect with children by teaching them safe road and pedestrian practices » and to manage emergency situations until the arrival of first responders, according to the City of Montreal job posting.

Candidates selected to fill the positions could be called upon to serve in a number of different weekday shifts, including a 7:30 a.m. to 8:30 a.m. morning shift, 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. shift, and a 3 p.m. to 4 p.m. afternoon shift.

In a Facebook post, the Rosemont–La-Petite-Patrie borough also indicates that crossing guards will be able to work in areas close to their residence.

The City says candidates should have experience in customer service or working with children.

They’ll also undergo a rigorous security check, which could include background checks on family and friends, as well.

Prospective applicants can view all requirements for the position online.
